Introduction to Open Source CMS: Modules

People inexperient with Open Source find it hard to familiarise with the possibilities and lack of limitations. We will look at how modules and extensions can cover up missing core functionality in an Open Source CMS.

Traditional proprietary CMS functionality is an absolute atributte, and extending the basic functionality is subject to extra licenses or new release of the system. When you are dealing with Open Source CMS, functionalities are far away from absolute atributtes.

You will usually find three basic types of functionality extensions for a CMS:

  1. General functionality extensions: these are interesting for a wide range of users. Examples of this can be integrations with credit card companies or ERP systems.
  2. Special functionality extensions: these extensions are probably just interesting for you as CMS user, like custom workflows following your companies existing routines for content publishing.
  3. Fundamental system changes: For example adding support for new database servers.
